Cleaning

Friday was bike maintenance day..with the help of a friend the "new" saddle went on, height adjusted and pedals off one of Pirate's bikes. I will take those to use on a borrowed bike in NZ along with my shoes..these are things that can cause problems if you don't use your own!

Now all three bikes that I use are sorted, so no regular swapping of components.

Today has been cleaning.

This took far longer than expected. It was always Pirate's job to clean our bikes after a ride while I prepared a meal...but he never wore his specs to do the job...and with cataracts as well he was obviously missing bits....ok, missing most!!
I haven't ridden this bike for a three years...so the crud was well solidified!!
I haven't done a perfect job, but it is respectable enough to be seen in public!! I will get a proper degreaser when I can...then clean with that, a wipe with an oily rag and you are ready for the next ride.

Next object for cleaning was the little brass box with a wooden liner...now is Indian...tigers...or Japanese...lady in a Kimono and a man in Japanese looking garb.

The designs are the same on opposite sides.

Any suggestions?

Whilst cleaning I have been watching films of potters made by the Goldmark gallery..... getting inspired!

  1. Mughal art, maybe? "Hindu and Muslim artists and craftsmen from the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent worked with Iranian masters in the masculine environment of the royal workshops. Their very different traditions were combined to produce a radically new, and rapidly evolving style of art for the court."

    1. No, looking at the clothes style I think Japan. And reading about tigers they were introduced to Japan from Korea in the 16th century...symbolising in art, the west, and change

    1. And I'm trying to reduce!! It will stand with grandpa's work made from shell cases(I think)..a vase, teapot and small box.

  5. Is the Japanese box for storing tobacco? I have several Oriental pieces I have collected from car boot sales. The box is beautiful.

    1. I think that is the most likely...but possibly never used as such...no smell

  6. I am so glad you are getting inspired for your pottery again.

So what is the story of the box? What story does it tell you of its journey into your collection? Does that make you smile, or is it just "this is a pretty interesting box. I am not sure where I got it from or why" acquisition?

I think that would be more important (to me) than what vintage or style - should you decide it falls in the latter category, the vintage/style question comes into play for value (for selling or insurance purposes).

But then, I am a do as I say not as I do hoarder on occasion.

  7. I wonder if Thelma over at Northstoke could help with the ID of that box?

  8. Bike maintenance is more involved than I thought. Your 3 bikes must shine now.
The box is interesting and shows lots of craft. Where did you procure it from? The source might provide clues on origins.

  11. Well done -- that's a productive day! Yes, an antique dealer or maybe even someone at a museum might know about the box. I think it's absolutely lovely and very unique. You remind me I have some polishing to do!

  12. Interesting box. No suggestions, I'm afraid. The bird, could be a crane? Revered in both China and Japan.

  13. I would say Chinese or Japanese motifs on the box, but I am no expert!

  14. I like the designs of this. Must be nicer and more convenient to have bikes you can just use instantly now.
