Wondering, planning....

It has been nice having bro here for a few days....he is off for some camping on his motorbike, so I'm getting on with things...

Drying fig slices..

And I have my first aubergine!!
It is still quite warm in the greenhouse, so the tomatoes are ripening ok.  Outside the weather is odd...showery and sometimes a really cold breeze....I go to town on the bus, wrapped up for our weather....and arrive in town ten miles away and 400 feet lower...and I'm decidedly over dressed!!

I managed to mow the grass yesterday, and mulched the leeks and a patch of bare earth as well as feeding the compost bin...but the rain came before I could use my new implement....a strimmer!!  I had an old one, but on inspection the head was mangled...and nothing of that make available in the DiY store....and it was cheaper to buy a whole new one. Thanks to bro for helping me decide which one.

Today I took the picture that I bought in France to get a frame....but the farmer was closed.....Ayr races weekend plus bank holiday Monday, so quite a few places were closed for a long weekend.
Change of plans ...time to research travel to France....a combination of flying to Paris and Flixbus from there. Then I enquired at the station as travel agents don't do rail fares....even with a senior Railcard the single fare is £84...and it goes up in the new year....add on the cost of London to Paris....and across Paris...  That ruled out train travel!!

I wonder if there might be a vacancy for a potter somewhere.....??!!

And tonight's sunset....

  2. Those figs look delicious. Are they yours or scrumped locally?

  3. Have you tried RailEurope? Not sure how their fares would compare but I use them for my continental rail tickets.

  4. Exactly a year ago (race weekend) I was in Ayr. It seems a different life time now. In my experience rail stations don't always get you the cheapest available deal on rail fares. Uber does rail fares now (i have no idea how) and Mr B uses an app that splits the travel into contiguous legs with separate tickets that sum to less than the single fare (trainline i think)

    1. And we missed each other!! I was at the Velodrome in Newport in South Wales (as opposed to the other Newport in West Wales!...not that I'd call it that....Trefdraeth, properly)

  5. Dave and I paid an appalling amount for our train tickets to Paris in August. I can only plead temporary insanity. When we looked at the tickets later we both thought, "Sacre bleu!" Somehow I just didn't compute the price when I booked them.

That is a very interesting (and strange) aubergine!

I was going to ask if you grew those figs but I see the answer above. Our fig tree has yet to produce any fruit, even though it's about ten years old and quite large.

  6. Finding an opportunity to make pottery in France would be great.
You holiday exploring France and visiting pottery outlets gives you some good inspiration. Having a friend living in France makes the entire idea very attractive.

  7. This all looks like such a wonderful and productive few days! It's so cool that you're drying your own figs and got your first aubergine from the greenhouse, that must feel so rewarding. The difference in weather just a few miles away is so interesting, I've noticed that before too.

It's a shame about the strimmer and the framing shop being closed, but it's great that you're still getting so much done. Your travel research for France is so interesting; it makes me wonder about all the different ways to travel now.
