Peter's Rose and history

We used to work in Peter's garden, not just the lawn..as Peter lost mobility, we did all the gardening including gathering fruit crops...apples, pears, plums, blackberries and raspberries... plus Japanese Quinces.

Initially I had started there as a house cleaner...but Peter said"you would rather be out in the garden, wouldn't you?"!

Another part of the job was just talking..and we learnt much of Peter's history...

His grandfather was from Sixpenny Handley, a village in Dorset..and was orphaned when his father was killed by a runaway cart.

This grandfather went to Kew as a boy apprentice and finished as one of the head gardeners there.  Ninety years ago, when Peter was a small boy his grandfather took him to one of the nurseries of a rose grower and breeder and gave him a rose marked "lost label" . What this meant that it hadn't come up to the standard required!  It is vigorous and floriferous, but has hardly any perfume.

Everywhere Peter lived, he took a cutting and grew this rose again. In his last garden it had grown to the top of a telegraph pole that held local phone cables! He told me to take cuttings when he became more frail...and here it is.

A further note...I was born in Micheldever in Hampshire, in the end cottage of a row of three thatched cottages.

The railway station is two miles away from the village...and when I was being born, Peter was lodging in the farm by the station....

Buddens and Doulton Lambeth

Thanks for your request, Dave...this is something I need to pass on to my daughter who is doing our family history research ( I am working on Pirate's history)

Buddens, Doulton Lambeth

My Grandmother, Ethel Mary Webster was a tweeny for her great aunts, Alice , and Alice's cousin Mary.

I will have to see what my daughter has on them...the easiest open access site to check is Tribal pages...it is free(under a certain capacity) and she has an account...but all you have to do is search on the main tribal pages home page by surname.  She has found a few cousins..and been found too!

Seated

Pirate has paid for a special seat to replace one that went derelict and was removed.....

His job today was to oversee the installation as he was still recovering from yesterday.

(We will know the results from that in a fortnight.)

The workers arrived earlier than arranged...and had it in place already!! We brought the postcrete, ready made and just needing filling in the holes and watering to make it set.

The fencing needed attention too

Whilst all that was going on, I took the camera and had a look at the burn...not as high as we have seen it in the past, after rain....but I still wouldn't go too near or go for a paddle!!

It's a beautiful place...and two minutes up the road is a house that pirate had wanted to buy many years ago. His boss at the time said No!!....too far from work at the airport...you should be within a reliable 30 minutes travel.

Then five years ago we had the job if grass cutting around the same house! Then with water , solar and wind power (and a generator just in case) and at that time pigs and chickens and a fruit and vege garden... previously it had been a small plant nursery with a large polytunnel, possibly run by those who bought it instead of Pirate!

Then the latest owner died, and moved to the Highlands to be with family...and now it looks like a summer holiday home.  Postbox by the gate...the postie used to bring letters to the door...and a wooden frame to hold the rubbish wheelie bins...which are not there in the winter...

It's by the trees in the centre of the picture.  A peaceful place.

Family History

I was looking for some examples of the work of Alice E Budden and Mary Budden, my grandmother's great aunts, for whom she worked as a "tweeny" or between stairs maid in 1910 or thereabouts. That means the one who does anything the upstairs or downstairs maids deem to be beneath them..

And I found this

Fascinating!!

Perhaps you might like to take Olga for a walk there, Steve?! I wonder if any others of the family are there
