This morning's view

We have been catted.

This says, You need to rest after yesterday's journey!

A long journey, but with enough breaks.

We started as dawn was breaking, in wind and rain, and that carried on for 150 miles.

Then it was mainly dry until after we arrived. The traffic wasn't too heavy, even going around Shrewsbury at afternoon school traffic time, but we found out when we got here that it is half term time!

Food was on the table for us as we arrived...and a welcome from Woodchip, The Carpenter's daughter (I don't use real names for family on my blog).

Now for hopefully an easy day!

travelling and meeting

Waking at 5.30 am, it wasn't worth risking returning to bed. Out at 6am..to a clear sky, stars and a quarter moon on the quarter year. By the time we  boarded the Bluebridge ferry at 7.30 dawn was arriving...twelve hours daylight to go.
A light breakfast on the ferry, then a quick right turn out onto the Cook Straight and we left the smooth waters of Queen Charlotte Sound. As we rounded the point into the last run into Wellington the ferry was surrounded by a pod (?) of porpoises. They were jumping around the bow, leaping at the side and diving under the ship.

We had a three hour break in Wellington, time for a leg stretch, shopping in the organic stores on Wakefield Street by the Youth Hostel and coffee in Zuma next door. Walking through streets like canyons, school groups in "crocodiles" after trips to Te Papa museum, hordes of shoppers and students...after three hours we'd had enough!
We did see the biggest wooden building in the world..once the government building, now part of Wellington University.
Next was a three and a half hour intercity bus ride, which sounds a lot, but the seats are comfortable enough, the driving good, the driver's humour typical Kiwi...dry...
The trip's highlight was meeting Pohangina Pete, a fellow blogger, at the bus stop in Palmerston North.
I'd hoped for more than a ten minute stop, as we had had half an hour on the way South..but it wad great to meet for real and maybe we can get to Pohangina before we leave.

Arrived safely

If rather tired....we're now in North Tolsta with friends after six bus rides...should have been five but one engine died!! and a two and three quarter hour ferry trip.   Luckily it wasn't rough, but the swell over the Minches was bad and I had my first ever dose of "mal de mer"!

Today we have woken late after the best night's sleep for a long time, despite sleeping on the floor (on a foam mat I hasten to add!) and have been for two walks. I've taken many photos, but I'll not be posting any here until after we get home. I've been generously lent time on our friends computer.

The weather here changes every few minutes.  We've seen beautiful sea and skyscapes, sun and fluffy clouds then rain as we walked home from the beach..in Welsh Traeth Mawr, in the Gaelic quite similar!

The Pirate is feeling very happy, having managed to get some phone signal-then he was driven indoors by the  wild wind. Am I allowed to be smug as I have signal with a different company?!

He is feeling much better after our walks and fresh air and we're looking forward to making the most of our time here-although it is "sod's law" that one of the Lewis Bloggers I'd hoped to meet will be off the Island until Thursday!!   I'm staying with "Boxes and Bellows", might meet up with "Windy Wanderings"...wish we knew where "Closed Sunday" is!!

journey home to Whanganui

Our coffee stop on the journey from Hamilton was well worth waiting for...
Bosco's in Te Kuiti.
Good coffee, top class food and service, art on the walls (for sale), interesting magazines to read.  A Bush garden out the back with benches and a fountain.
Owned and run by a cyclist too-can't fault it!!

Soon after that we turned off by these cliffs

and then I saw new bits of countryside, followed by the roads that I'd missed when I went on the Eastern side of Ruapehu.

Another "pit stop"
before we completed the journey home.

Dinner was out at the Red Lion in Whanganui- who would want to cook after a week away and a four hour journey home?!
