storm damage

At the National Trust for Scotland's property, Culzean castle.

I know beech trees have shallow roots....but there are a lot of trees of all types, gone in the latest storms.

If the roots are shallow the tree will fall when the ground is saturated. We have had them fall here. It's amazing how tall a tree can grow with so little root. Watch out for them.

This is the worst thing about winter storms...all of those old giants, toppled in the blink of an eye.

I noticed quite a few old Pine trees down here too, even though we've not had anything like strong winds. Pines too have very shallow roots.
