Achieving plenty

I did quite a lot today... despite a slow start.

Why am I always busy? A habit, perhaps....it was far nicer being busy together, then we could have time to do something else...

I seem to be alone a lot of the time now. I know I dislike crowds, but you can have too much of your own company!!

Anyhow.... garden review as the coffee was brewing....

I must sow the tomatoes, aubergines and squashes earlier next year...they really got going too late in the season!!

And I found three more squashes lurking in the undergrowth!! The two bigger ones are Crown Prince type squash...and the little white one a "munchkin" type called Ghost.

A sweet treat on top of breakfast!!

Then potting up yoghurt...this batch came out nice and thick....I'm not sure what I did differently!! Usually I have enough liquid after straining the yoghurt, for the next loaf of bread to be baked.

The large jar is the latest batch, the wee jar is that reserved as a starter for the next

Then a little bit of ironing....I think that it is time to use the cover as a pattern to make the next one!!

Then Duolingo....

Before lunch I tried out the "new" lawnmower...and at about 95 years old it works well...where the modern one would struggle!!

My neighbour cut the "meadow" this afternoon...with a petrol mower that Pirate gave him! He will take all the cut grass..which should mean better wildflowers next year.

Then apple juicing all afternoon....

One small bowl of apples....makes a bigger bowl of cut apples...cut to go through the mincer easily.
Each bowl makes three of the rectangular dish full...which is enough for one pressing...

Minced apple in the muslin. Disc on top of that and the screw presses the plate down....and squeezes out the juice...which is filtered through two layers of cotton pillowcase.

I had thought to have a day out to watch a cyclo cross bike race tomorrow....there are important ones this weekend at Callander House by the Antoine Wall ...but the thought of high winds and heavy rain.....I'll be getting on with the juicing!!
And now a second dose of Duolingo....

Glad the new (old) mower works so well.

You were very busy. I agree being alone is wonderful but sometimes going out to be around people is much needed.
I need to make a new ironing board cover too. I’ll learn from you if you post it.

You make some very good food from local materials.

I wish I had half your energy! I walked upstairs yesterday for a shower after breakfast and promptly fell asleep on the bed!!

Harvesting your own is always good... good luck with the tomatoes... Your apple juice is a dream – pure energy.
I think it's great that you make your own yogurt... it immediately reminded me of bread baking. I bake my own bread with sourdough, and the sourdough is also raised with starter dough.
I also learned with Duolingo and am now on Babbel. What language are you practicing?

I do hope all those tomatoes ripen for you! The berries make my mouth water. Great to see a good yogurt batch! I need to get back into doing that. Yum also for all your apple juice.

I started with learning Scottish Gàidhlig but changed to improving my rusty French.

I'd love to go back to Sourdough...but only baking for myself, plus travelling makes that awkward

I wonder if the races will be cancelled because of the weather? Most of our tomatoes looked like that too -- green as can be. We also planted too late.

Keeping busy is very helpful and important.
You certainly accomplish many things all in record time.
Joining a club of some sort to share interests/expertise might bring more people into your life. If that's what you want.

Wow! After a day like that I'm wasted for the next one.

Only if the wind gusts reach over 45 mph I think, as there are quite a few trees in the park around the course. I was windy but b not that bad

The French conversation has been a start.
There isn't much going on actually in the village..I'll have another look as it might have improved since I last checked

Today wasn't as hectic!!

Sometimes I am so tired of my own thoughts! 😂

I always threatened to use my juicer . . . I always threatened to make yoghurt too . . . Ah well, I do make other things. Making yoghurt would be a saving on what you have to pay for commercial stuff, I will confess.

It isn't a lot of work...use the same percentage fat starter and milk..Yeo greek yoghurt and full fat organic milk are the best combination I've found. I could use a local organic milk, but I'm too far from the shop they stock

That is indeed a busy day. That yoghurt looks amazing - where did you get your first starter?

See the reply above....organic full fat milk and organic greek yoghurt...but make sure that it isn't thickened with gelatine or pectin, as some are in NZ. Just a small pot is enough for a litre...I make two pints as my yoghurt maker takes that and I begrudge making a short measure for the same amount of power!! Then just keep back the same amount of yoghurt to start the next batch. Every now and again it might need a boost from some more shop bought yoghurt.

I like days like that, one task after another done and dusted. Dusting though...that can wait. Do you wrap your green tomatoes ominous paper to ripen?
