Back in Geraldine...

And the world and his wife are using the campground WiFi....so just words for now!
We went to Waikouaiti and stayed at the same beach campground...in the same cabin!
It was good to catch up with Peter and Laura in Waikouaiti pottery..and see Laura's flower drawings and paintings in the Dunedin Botanic Gardens information centre.
We enjoyed eating at the old storehouse restaurant at Sugar and Salt, the village stores at Karitane. This is only open in summer, and the couple who run it go to Berlin to sell ice cream in the summer there! The stores and fuel pumps stay open all year.
Every day we travelled over to Mosgiel..much further than we had planned but we are still glad to have stayed in Waikouaiti.
Pirate caught up with a fellow cyclist who had helped him about ten years ago  at least when he last rode the Dunedin NZ masters games. After all the training and driving, the track racing was rained off.

From Waikouaiti we headed back north, and left the main highway after an hour and headed west towards the mountains and Central Otago. Big Country. Breathtaking.
We ended up in Naseby for two nights, which calls itself 2000 feet above worry!! A relaxed small town, population 110, with many holiday homes and suchlike, and a very good independent campsite where we stayed on the edge of the forest.
Coming from there we decided to avoid the highways even more...and hit the gravel, going over Dansey's Pass.
Not for caravans and campers, thankfully, but mostly in good condition. I don't think my nerves would stand another pass drive....but it was stunningly beautiful.
And so back to Geraldine...and only a week to go....sigh.....

We, too, have travelled over the gravel of Dansey's Pass - but by car (it needed a very good washing before we handed it back to the rental company!).
My wife remembers paddling in the icy mountain stream which kept the track company.
Very happy memories of that delightful country - "Un Zud".

Wow - that seems to have gone fast! Mind you, you sound to have packed in a lot and there is the old adage of time flies when you are having fun - enjoy every minute left x

Sounds like quite an adventure, especially that gravel road!

It all sounds beautiful and amazing! I remember the big open country when we drove across from Queenstown, east towards Dunedin years ago. And quite an impressive mountain pass too!

Avis we travelled by car over the pass..but passed a couple of cyclists...they knew what was ahead having done it four years ago...but I wouldn't!!

"The world and his wife." I grew up with "Everybody and their dog."

One more week to savor and keep in your heart.
