A couple of days ago we weeded and dug a friends' garden...she isn't strong enough, and he has been through cancer treatment twice.
We brought our own tools and lunch, and got the vege patch ready for planting and the greenhouse weeded.
Their gardener has injured his leg, so cannot work for a while.
This way it won't be a huge job when he is better again.
Our friend has rediscovered lawn mowing ...just the walking exercise he needs!
What was your garden like when you were growing up?
I was born in a thatched cottage with a well stocked fruit and vege plot..and I have always had something, even just a row of herbs growing on a windowsill in one student flat.
I was happiest with good productive gardens, one on our smallholding in North Wales and my two allotments in the South Wales valleys.

I've always been more into ornamental plants than vegetables, but we did have citrus trees in our yard growing up! I miss those now!
Steve ,citrus trees are something I miss when we return from NZ to Scotland!
Longish, narrow patch of weedy grass with a concrete walk from the back door to the garage. Mom occasionally tilled a patch to plant tomatoes and radishes, and there was a sturdy rhubarb plant back beside the garage that I ate off of all summer. I had to pull dandelion and plantain weeds and edge. There was a maple tree for a while, until it got sick and old and they cut it down. The grass never grew well there again. The fence to one side had a lilac, on the other side Mrs. Rizzardi's green grape arbor, that I snitched sour grapes from.
I sometimes had a swing set, a tetherball pole for a while, and the odd blow up pool. A couple of years there was an open sided tent and a frame hammock.
The front was just lawn, and a huge maple tree on the verge. Mom sometimes planted flowers right in front of the porch. Marigolds, I think.
I grew up with a mostly ornamental garden, but with a couple of fruits trees in it. However my maternal grandfather who lived in our village (on our street) always kept two large allotments, and worked them so assiduously he produced masses of food for us all (potatoes for the whole year for the whole family, one of the things I remember...).
Have always gardened - at present the garden is in a sorry state as the drought still hangs in there. Now that most things have been cancelled there will be more time to sort the garden out and replant although on the news this morning they were talking about a shortage of seedlings.
My parents were children of the depression. We always had a large garden to feed four children, year round.
I know we had a garden and probably grew carrots and other veg. But I most remember the rhubarb patch we had next to a fence. And we had flowers - peonies and crocus and huge lilac bushes. I still love the smell of the lilacs.
Wow, that is a big lawn! Looks not too steep though... The vegetable plot looks good, how lovely of you to help out.
I grew up on 25 acres, so we always had a good vegetable plot and fruit. One of the things I am missing this year about not going 'home' to NZ is eating my Dad's fresh fruit and vegetables. Only this morning he told me that the pears are really good this year. Sadly last year we had hardly any. Amazing when you think how dry their summer has been.
