Weekend

We have had a good weekend with our friend staying over...bike ride together yesterday. Long walk this morning.

Good company, great craic...and neighbours calling by too.

I found this feather on our walk...possibly from a Snipe, there are some around.

It does sound like a good weekend, there is something to be said for meeting up with friends, something we used to take for granted and now feels rather precious 😊

I had to Google "craic" but now I know what it means. And do the Scots pronounce it "crack", like the Irish are said to.

What's the protocol when you turn up at a velodrome? Surely it's essential you ride a brakeless Colnago with a monster fixed gear and go hell-for-leather until you topple from the top of the banking in sheer fatigue. Riding a bike with panniers and a warning bell would see you drummed out of the track fraternity. Similarly with stopping for a sandwich on the home straight.

I saw Fausto Coppi at Herne Hill, possibly before you were born. And Rik van Steenbergen. Think of me as purely historical

No need to concern yourself with a phoneticised version of Ar Hyd y Nos. I worked one out myself and - as I suspected - it sings better. Especially the rising sequence at the beginning of Line 3. "Gogoniant" is funny to sing, though.

Just yesterday, laid neatly in my beans was a blue jay feather, and it was so perfect I had to stop my weeding to admire it.

Robby Dundee isn't a steep track and is suitable for gears or fixed wheel bikes...but not at the same time!
Glad you have worked out Ar Hyd y Nos..explaining the pronunciation with English words has its pitfalls..like "scone"...!!

What year was Coppi at Herne Hill? I know I used to group with my father to watch Herne Hill, but we missed a couple. Remember I am a third (at least!) Generation trackie, vintage 1953!!

Cat, yes the same way

I'd had enough of the West Riding and was desperate for journalistic work in London. Joined Cycling Weekly (then called Cycling and Mopeds) as moped expert in 1959 and left a year later, equally fed up with covering time trials that started at 06.30 on Sunday out in Essex. Saw Coppi late 1959.

Ah, we were in Winchester then..we had been in Darlington, saw Reg Harris racing at Richmond Grass meeting in 57. We got back to watching track in 1963 when we moved to Southampton
