Walking upriver this time, past the Voes, or header ponds for water power to the mills.
The water went from them through a tunnel to the mills and bleach works.
We walked further up from the renovated weir and fish ladder, until we could see Sorn Castle. As we turned back it began to rain lightly, and as we arrived back to the town the decorations on the street lights lit up.
Despite some places where they have silted up, there is a considerable water flow through the Voes.
Apparently these are council property apart from a single and a double flat...and there is no money to renovate them.

Interesting. I've never heard of "voes." It's a shame the council can't come up with money to make those flats habitable. Or maybe there's not much demand for housing in that area?
Steve it is the word for the header ponds.
East Ayrshire doesn't have a lot of cash, there are plenty of people needing homes.
One problem with renovating Vs new build is that the latter either doesn't pay VAT or can claim it back. So 20% cheaper....
It's good that the history of the area is being maintained. Sad about the flats though.
That is a pretty and historic area, I like to see photos of rivers and canals. If they can't renovate the flats, it might be best to tear them down if they are abandoned. Best to renovate of course, so people have homes.
I am not sure how things work there, but over here, when we have old buildings like that, they are sometimes sold to the public for $1 each. You cannot be a commercial developer, but the idea is to get a home to someone who needs it, while not 'breaking them' so that they have money to do the required repairs. The city gains a taxable property, and the people gain a home. Is this something that would work there?
That has been done elsewhere Debby..I remember it being done successfully in Liverpool.
