Nearly 25km yesterday, going up a side valley that everyone used to ride regularly.. unfortunately the logging lorries have hammered the road..two years ago there were a lot of unsealed gravel patches waiting for tar seal..they are ok but there are far more new ones. So I called it a day after going 6km up the valley.
It got much hotter, and the breeze turned to wind as I got back, so nicely timed...and this morning it is raining..the first time since I arrived. Much needed as they have just declared a fire ban.
Now this is how heavy goods should travel....

Logging trucks hammer the gravel road into my place in the Marlborough Sounds. 16km and heavily corrugated over much of its distance. I'm wondering how I will ever regularly use my road bike in future.
Logging roads are always terrible!
You end up taking the bike in the car then going for a ride..I've been doing that in Scotland...it feels as if it is defeating the object of using the bike!
And even with a mountain bike, 16km of ruts is a no go !
There are some areas where trucks need to carry the logs as there is no rail - I get upset that our highways here are also so dominated by trucks when there is a rail network. Well done on the cycle.
Almost 25 km?! Go, you!!!
We have many plantations of trees and they’re usually near where our national parks are. So when you decide to go camping you play dodge the timber trucks.
Much cooler here today as well. Rain is forecast
...keep pedaling.
It looks like Spring! (jealous)
Logging trucks do lots of damage to roads. The weight is tremendous, and asphalt cracks and deteriorates. Are there any bike lanes in NZ?
you still had another busy day.
Yes there are..plenty of good ones and plenty of others!
Just the one long distance "end to end"....and quite a few tracks to ride on. I'd love it if there were more bike alternatives to state highways...there are a couple of valleys with roads I'd love to ride again, but it means a trek on SH first...
Definitely summer now...fire ban...
Yes, sir!!!
I just found out today that I will be getting a new knee in May, just in time for my birthday. Give me a few months...maybe I'll be able to keep up with you!
Yay for knees! Take it steady, you'll be up and running....ok walking.. before too long !!
Yes, loggers can really damage a road. We also had to deal with the damage caused by gas drillers. All those heavy trucks really tore up our road. You would think the State would make they pay to have it properly fixed, but they don't.
Good thing for the rain! It is such a blessing in dry times.
