Progress and disappointment

Things are looking better in the sewing/bike/guest room....

But there is the rest which still needs action.. although it is less than it was!

Cue a coffee before half an hour on the turbo trainer there

Today was the day of the 15 minute phone interview with Alliance Française to confirm which course I should be on.

The line was awful and crackly, despite him moving to near a window to improve it...it did, briefly....and he was switching back-and-forth between languages...

My ND brain prefers to prepare what I want to say..I don't like phone calls at the best of times...and I made a mess of it. Forgetting things I knew well how to say ...in person....or understand written or heard....

Apparently the Saturday course is more grammatical...which wasn't obvious...and there is another more conversational one on Monday evenings...but he said just go to the first one...and I can swap....

So that would mean I won't be able to get there and back by public transport...and would have to use my car, going in to Glasgow during early evening rush hour.

Apparently there is free parking after 6pm there and enough of it....and my car is thankfully ok in a LEZ zone (the Oily One checked for me)

Today's bright spot...a letter from Debby!! Who has lovely legible writing....I must tame my drunken spider....which has deteriorated of late, despite diary writing.

I felt I just had to get OUT! After the disappointment...so by bus to post two letters..one to a friend in England....her husband was a flatmate of my ex!! But we have always kept in touch.

The other to a retired Architect and tree planter now living in Kansas City. Originally from Wrecsam, we met on a geology field course at Preston Montford field study centre on an A level geology field course. We must have been 17....and have never met again...but kept on writing.

Outside it is getting colder and colder with a fierce Easterly gale...yet another storm tonight and tomorrow. The wind is roaring around the house and at least not so sharply through the kitchen and bathroom vents....they catch the westerlies!!

Just curious why you call your son the Oily One. Seems like it would be an insult, but I'm assuming there's a story behind it!

Because he is very good at getting oily!! And his hobby is mending cars

Lovely jade plant!
Neighbor gave me a little clipping from hers this summer, and it’s already grown four times the size.

You have worked so hard on your French, I can feel the disappointment in your words.
I hope you weather through the next storm safely!

You might have more to sort/declutter but the work you've accomplished is impressive. Getting the rest done at a comfortable pace seems right.
Your Saturday French class seems enjoyable and from what you say, you are building great skills. Alternatively, have you considered the online conversational courses that you can use at home?

It is a wonderful thing to be a bright spot! Thank you! I am sorry you interview did not go as you hoped.

Oh, and ps here your oily one would be called a grease monkey.

I had to look up LEZ zone. I don't think we have them here.

I share your feelings of discomfort using the 'phone. I try to avoid telephone calls as far as possible.
How lovely to have pen friends that are still in touch. I am ashamed to admit that I gradually lost contact with mine over the years due to my laziness in not keeping up with the correspondence.

Could you ask for a re-test, explain the difficulties?

Yes, I would think that conversational French would be more useful, but too bad it means driving your car.

A letter can be the best thing ever! That's too bad about the course. I hope it works out all right in the end.

Yes, we're having stormy weather here too, though probably nothing like yours.

Bummer about the French. I had a similar experience in my Alliance Française interview -- I was suddenly unable to say things I know perfectly well. Must be nerves, and I didn't even have a bad connection to contend with!

You have done wonders with the room - it all takes time, doesn't it? How lovely to send and receive letters - I shall get back into that one day, I hope. My writing is definitely more of the chicken scratch variety.

Online...no thanks....I don't like zoom or phone calls!

This was just a four leaved bedraggled scrap found on a wet winter pavement about 25+ years ago!

The first one is next Saturday....I'll just see how it goes

I'm glad that it isn't just me!!
Which course did you do, what level?

I find writing what I want to remember helps me. Although if they call out of the blue I’m kinda stuck. I seem to be getting worse as I get older.

Neat!

Brave of you to commit to a drive into such a big city in the rush hour for your classes, that (for me) would spoil everything as my anxiety would be sky high! Your room clearance looks good. Betty
