It's a nymph of the recently arrived (in New Zealand) South African mantis, Miomantis caffra. They're now the more common mantis in the north of New Zealand and seem to be slowly extending their range further south — they've now been found in Christchurch.

Yes it is, but not our European variety.
And the North American mantis are bright green.
Definitely! But not quite what we have here in New England. Ours are greener! They look like aliens, don't they.
