Gradually pruning the tree!
I have found that photographing the block then putting a black and white filter on the image has helped.. slowly but surely....you can take off more, but replacing a cut is possible but difficult!!
Marking and cutting... getting there!

I actually like the 'noise' - it has the movement of water or sand. Good idea turning the photo black and white to help.

Beautiful! Photographing work in progress is great way to view things with a "new eye". I remember viewing drawings through a mirror, for a different perspective, in a still life class. Phone cameras work the same way and let you keep the image for reference.
