As we left the campsite in Riverton, over the river bridge to the older part of the town, we visited the local i-site (i for information) and museum.
Te Hikoi means The Journey. Quite apt for us....
We visited the museum which was a bargain at 9NZD each...one 15 minute DVD starting the history of the first people here, then the Europeans at least 800 to 1000 years later, with sealers, whalers and fishers. Many historical artefacts, and a 22 minute video of "The Good Old Days", recording memories of people born in the first thirty years of the last century. I think it must have been recorded about twenty years ago.
Much to make one ponder.
Then a short walk to see some of the murals, and of course coffee and cake!
Some nifty navigation, a visit to friends then we were away North to Balclutha, this time through Gore, the one route that was new to us.
