Greymouth/Māwhera

It is interesting to read the displays at the railway station.

The sidings are now the Warehouse and Countdown shops..I wonder if the Warehouse building is old or new in an old style? The traditional canopy shapes certainly enhance it.

This is the terminus for the tourist train that goes via the  Otira tunnel and Arthur's pass..but also goods trains up to Westport, inland via Reefton where the line divides again for Lyttleton by Christchurch.

Over the road from the station is the long distance cycling and walking track

And you can see from the old photo that cycling is nothing new here!

On our way out of Greymouth at Ngahere we saw a freight train going south..good to see that...everywhere needs to use rail far more!!

You catch my attention when you blog about trains. Very, very few passenger trains here.

Nice to see the station looking well cared for, so many stations fell into neglect after the sell off of the railways in the early 1990s. We definitely need more trains... and some coastal shipping!
