Elephant Hawkmoth caterpillar.
How it arrived on the back door mat I don't know!!
Now moved to the wildlife corner with the clump of nettles....which I think have been home to the peacock and tortoiseshell butterflies that have been in my garden this past week

That caterpillar is most unusual. I've never seen one.
The common caterpillar here is black and orange and kind of fury.
They are quite amazing aren't they? Glad that you noticed it and found it a good residence. Nettles have their uses.
Probably wandering around trying to find somewhere to pupate. Or maybe dropped by a hungry bird?!
The bird theory is possible. Hopefully it is safe now
