the surf breaking across the harbour bar
as the sun goes behind the top of the village
the tide edging in...it was almost over the playing field by the harbour
the swell coming along the harbour wall and splashing up over
it has been rough and windy all day today..
here is the old model for the weathervane
and the sea outwith the harbour.....not to be ventured upon!

the club hut
Last week, before our Trip to Tolsta , I made soup......lots of it...
The tub emerged from the freezer last night...and seemed hardly defrosted by the morning! All was not lost and The Pirate took the carfull of food to the club hut of the Ayr Roads Cycling Club.
The club hut used to be almost the summer HQ of the club at one time, with stove, kitchen equipment and supplies, woodburner, clothes drying rack, maps and reading material. It has just had a new roof so the Annual Club Bash to the club hut-about 35 miles South of Ayr- celebrated this.
I rode down with our friend GC and we arrived just as the rain came down.
In all, we had twenty two steaming cyclists in the hut...we could have fitted two or three more in, but only just! All were treated to soup, tattie scones, bread, cake of all sorts and plenty of tea!
A toast was drunk, a wee dram each from a bottle that had survived the journey by bike from Ayr...including being dropped on the road!
getting the spread ready
my bike!
GC, battling with zip
soup and kettle ready
view from the club hut
the workhorse
All the best for 2014...and may we all be back here in 2015 to celebrate !

Friday...
We didn't go anywhere....The Pirate filled the coal scuttle..tended the fire..and we stayed warm all day!!
bus shelter for Dru
Bus shelters on the Isle of Lewis have four sides...so whichever quarter the wind is you'll be ok!! Some even have the "sides" sticking out further than the flat roof.
No seats though...
This one is in North Tolsta where we were staying, in the Western Isles.

lunch out!
Yesterday we had a walk on Gress beach, then lunch in Stornaway with Mrs.Boxes and Bellows and E, and Mr. Windy of Windy Wanderings. The Bridge cafe is to be highly recommended!
It was a joy as well to meet up with a fellow blogger, and also to recognise him from when we both raced on outdoors hard velodromes an age ago!
We walked down to the beach from the village again- it changes all the time.
It refreshes and recharges both of us and put me in mind of the poem my father used to quote, which was adapted one might say by other little airmen....and sanitized a little for general consumption, with apologies (I think) to John Masefield...
" I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and sky.... I left my pants and socks there.... I wonder if they're dry?" !!!!
After supper The Crofter came to visit and talk...and talk....it was a good evening, but after a late night and with today's wind and rain, we're going to have a quiet day, with a walk to the beach if there is a break in the weather.
We're having much talking and thinking about the future, both near and far. Not just for the Pirate but for myself and both of us.
Something it is easier to do when one is away from home base, but still with friends. Trying to dispel worries and be positive and not to dwell on unknowns.
It'll be a long day tomorrow, up early for the 7am ferry....

following charlie
Today's expedition was early, as we ventured South from Stornoway on the Tairbert road, but turned off to the sea loch where Charles Edward Stuart made his landing. Interestingly there are no foxes...aka "Charlie"...on the islands...
We had a marvellous walk, the Pirate and E saw the rump of a deer disappearing over the mountain, E and myself saw a golden eagle, and we all saw a Herdwick sheep.....just the one.....??!!
After sandwiches and tea we went to the places Charles walked to after landing in the 1700s..but we cheated and went by car!!
The weather, after last night's seeing in of the New Year with much wind and rain was just breezy, and until later in the day, reasonably warm. We saw the mainland looking dark and snow topped and had messages from friends and family in Wales and England and even Ayrshire, of flooding and otherwise miserable weather.
After returning home and recovering we had a visit from Mrs. Up Yours, then I went visiting with her and A while E and the Pirate made a super supper!
